On 28 October 1932, Richard Burdsall and Terris Moore, members of a four-person American expedition, made the first ascent of Minya Konka (Gongga Shan, 7,509 m) in Sichuan, via the north-west ridge. The other two members of the expedition, Arthur B. Emmons and Jack T. Young, did not reach the summit. Until 1958, no American mountaineer climbed higher than this peak.
